What Separates An Agent From A Chatbot With A Timer.
Anyone can schedule a prompt. The difference between that and a system you would trust with real work lives in a handful of mechanisms most builders skip. These are ours.
The signed brief
Every agent works against a one-page brief you signed: the job, the standard, what done means. It re-checks the brief to the letter every run, and if a single character changed without re-signing, it stops and asks. Scope creep dies at the door.
PIPS, the injection shield
One rule does the heavy lifting: an instruction's power comes from where it entered, never from what it claims or whose name it wears. The agent obeys its approved file manifest, and everything else it reads arrives as information with zero power to command.
The cron engine
The scheduler is the difference between a demo and an employee. It fires the agent with stable instructions, takes one bounded slice of work per run, and works the hours you don't. Small slices are the secret: they keep quality flat across run 3 and run 300.
Memory that compounds
Everything learned is written to plain files with provenance and trust levels attached, then read again before every run. Independent memories merge on their own; genuine conflicts escalate to you. The memory system is BIMRI, and it is open source.
Drift control
Long-running agents fail by drifting off objective, usually around week three, usually invisibly. Ours re-read the objective at the start of every sub-task and log an objective check before touching work. Day 40 behaves like day 1.
The review folder
Nothing an agent makes reaches the world on its own. Finished work lands in a folder tagged READY and waits for a human decision. Shipping is always your deliberate act, and the journal shows exactly what happened and why.
Hard limits, written down
Spend authority sits at zero, publishing waits for your hand, and outbound contact is off the table entirely. These limits are structural, written into the files the agent obeys, and they hold even when someone actively tries to talk it out of them.
Graduated autonomy
Trust is earned in stages: first you watch it work, then you approve its work, then it runs inside boundaries you widen on evidence. Nobody sane hands a new hire the keys on day one. Same rule here.
Autonomy You Can Leave Alone.
Most automation fails the moment nobody is watching it. Ours is built for exactly that moment. Every agent we deploy runs inside the security spine, where publishing, spending, and contacting anyone all require a human hand. The agent produces; you decide what leaves the building.
We also attack our own systems deliberately: authority impersonation, hidden injection, override planting, credential extraction, scope escalation, concealment requests. Eighteen probes so far, and all eighteen held. A pasted security block is a claim. A passed probe is proof.
When its checks fail mid-run, an agent on this architecture is built to stop and ask instead of improvising, and the production journals show it doing exactly that.
